A few years ago, we decided to take a leap that most people thought was a little crazy: owner-build our own 3,600 sq ft ICF home in Utah. No general contractor. Just us, a set of plans, an ambitious budget, and a whole lot of determination.

Owner-building is one of the most rewarding things you can do — and one of the most overwhelming. We quickly discovered that the project management tools out there were built for professional contractors managing crews of fifty, not for a couple of first-timers trying to keep track of permits, subcontractor bids, material deliveries, and a rapidly shifting timeline.

We tried spreadsheets. We tried sticky notes. We tried various apps. Nothing clicked. Everything felt like it was made for someone else's world — not ours. We were constantly asking ourselves: What were we supposed to do this week? Did we order the trusses yet? What does the framing contractor need to show up on Tuesday?

We finished our build. It was beautiful, it was ours, and it cost significantly less than hiring someone else to do it. But we never stopped thinking about how much easier it could have been with the right tools.
